DEXAMETHASONE
(FDA Category 3S)
OZURDEX (TM) (Allergan) is an intravitreal corticosteroid implant.
DOSING INFORMATION: Intravitreally inject (0.7 mg dexamethasone/implant) following branch retinal vein occlusion or central retinal vein occlusion.
PHARMACOKINETICS: Plasma concentrations were below the lower limit of quantitation in the majority of patients.
CAUTIONS: Contraindicated in patients with active of suspected ocular or periocular infections or with advanced glaucoma. Use with caution in patients with a history of ocular herpes simplex. The most common adverse events were increased intraocular pressure and conjunctival hemorrhage. Adverse events seen with intravitreal injections include; endophthalmitis, eye inflammation, and retinal detachments. Corticosteroid use has been associated with posterior subcapsular cataracts, increased intraocular pressure, glaucoma, and may increase the risk of secondary ocular infections due to bacteria, fungi, or viruses.
FDA APPROVED INDICATIONS: Dexamethasone intravitreal implant is indicated for the treatment of macular edema following branch retinal vein occlusion or central retinal vein occlusion.
